Annual Community Tree Planting Days 2008

Karlkurla Bushland Park was targeted for the 2008 July community tree planting day.
Approximately 150 people gathered to do their part in greening the goldfields. Over 4000 trees, shrubs and ground covers were planted on the day. Community response was fantastic with the trees and shrubs planted superbly. A variety of hardy species were planted including eucalypts, westringias, and eremophilas.
The day was worthwhile for both environmental and social reasons. It was fantastic to see the Kalgoorlie-Boulder community come together to do their bit for the environment. The planted area will provide a habitat for birds and wildlife, reduce the local dust problems and provide much needed shade in summer for everyone.

Community and corporate groups, mining companies, families and individuals joined together for a common cause, working for a better environment.

Employees from Kanowna Belle Gold Mine were awarded the Corporate Challenge Award and the 1st Boulder Scout Group were awarded a prize for their team spirit and their amazing tree planting song. Prizes were also given to the youngest and oldest tree
planters and the family with the biggest
turnout.

Sponsors who helped out and made this day possible were:
• City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder for preparing and mulching the sites and laying all the reticulation, a huge job over many weeks.
• Western Power, the main sponsor of these days, for providing the BBQs, funding for advertising, prizes and drinks.
• BHP Billiton Community Participation Team for manning the Registration Desk
• Barrick Kanowna
• The golden mail and Korker Roo
• Orana Cinemas and Video Ezy for donating prizes and giveaways.
