Junior Landcare Project

KBULG’s Junior Landcare Program (JLP) has being running for over 13 years andcontinues to expand.  The aim of the program is to keep teachers and students aware of, and involved in dealing with local environmental issues.  KBULG visits all 12 Kalgoorlie-Boulder schools at the beginning of the year and encourages staff to enrol their class in the JLP.

All schools and interested teachers receive a comprehensive locally produced Junior Landcare Package which contains details of local environmental information and activities undertaken inside and outside the school. The package includes classroom landcare activity sheets, environmental education resources, suggested times for landcare activities such as tree planting and seed collecting, out of school activities, pre & post excursion activities and several pamphlets. KBULG regularly send updates, information and reminders via email and fax of any upcoming events.

Enrolled Junior Landcare classes receive a Junior Landcare Poster and can receive points throughout the year for being involved in landcare activities both inside and outside the classroom. At the end of the year the class with the most points receives a trophy and wins the title of Junior Landcare Class of the year. Each student is rewarded with a KBULG prize pack full of environmental goodies

Children in the program participate in a range of landcare activities including tree planting, bush land walks, planting school native gardens, class room projects, implementing recycling, Waste Free Wednesdays, a Landcare Drawing
Competition, Schools Tidy Days, and making Seedballs just to name a few.

Through the JLP students learn to appreciate their local environment and are made aware of bushland management issues.  They are encouraged to develop a sense of responsibility and to think about these issues and ways they can help. The program continues to expand with more and more classes enrolling each year. The program has grown from 15 classes in 1995 to over 110 classes in 2010. All 12 Kalgoorlie-Boulder schools are involved in the program.
