Waterwise Garden Competition 2007The 2007 Kalgoorlie-Boulder Annual Waterwise Garden Competition had over 20 entrants vying for $1200 worth of Waldecks gardening vouchers and 8 trailer loads of mulch donated by the Water Corporation. The Judges were particularly impressed with the entrants gardens, which featured Goldfields native plants and/or waterwise plants, mulch and weed free verges. Travelling around and judging the gardens allowed the judges to see that many Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents are making an effort to have gardens which are suitable to our semi-arid climatic conditions but also attractive, well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing. It was great to see that a number of residents are also maintaining their verges and reducing or removing altogether, high water use lawns and gardens. Garden styles varied greatly, native, cottage, cactus, formal and informal gardens where presented for judging. The highest scoring garden overall was a garden in the Residential Owner Maintained Category. Tania Kentish's garden of Carrington St, South Kalgoorlie stood out as a lovely, well presented waterwise garden. Whilst being relatively young, at just 3 years old, as the plants mature it will continue to develop into a beautiful garden. It showed that a lot of thought has gone into the layout and plantings, utilising quite a variety of plants, including callistemons, grevillias, acacias and myoporum, alongside, seaside daisys and dietes. This fully reticulated garden contains no lawn and they have also created a garden on their verge consisting of waterise and tough native plants including several different eucalypts, cassias, eremophilas and succulent groundcovers. Many of the plants in this verge garden were grown by the KBULG Native Plant Group, purchased through KBULGS Annual nursery clearout sale. KBULG wishes to thank all the entrants for participating in the Waterwise Garden Competition and all the sponsors for making the competition possible.
