Waterwise Garden Competition 2008The 2008 Kalgoorlie-Boulder annual Waterwise Garden Competition was a great success with over 30 nominations received. This year’s competition particularly focussed on all aspects creating and maintaining a waterwise garden, the overall appearance, colour and tidiness of gardens and verges. The judges were particularly impressed with the amount of effort and planning which had gone into the many different gardens and the use of native and exotic species, mulch and weed free verges. It was great to see that many Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents were endeavouring to have gardens which are suitable to our semi-arid climatic conditions but also attractive, well-maintained and aesthetically pleasing. It was also fantastic to see that a number of residents are also maintaining their verges and reducing or removing altogether, high water use lawns and gardens. Garden styles varied greatly, native, cottage, cactus/succulent, formal and informal gardens where presented for judging. $1200 worth of McBrides gardening vouchers and 6 trailer loads of mulch donated by the Water Corporation were won by the highest scoring entrants in each category. The highest scoring garden was Delma Daw and Lou Lagrange's garden of Lyall St, Lamington. Their garden stood out as the most well presented waterwise garden. It showed that a lot of thought has gone into the layout and plantings, with sculptured paths, retaining walls and a diversity that flows throughout the entire garden. The garden showcases a range of Waterwise plants blending both native and exotic plants. This fully reticulated garden contains no lawn and is fully mulched. This garden is a real credit to its owners. Right: Delma Daw and Lou Lagrange win the Residential Owner Maintained Category and had the highest scoring garden overall. The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group wishes to thank all the entrants for participating in the Waterwise Garden Competition and all the sponsors for making the competition possible.
Left: Morrie Goodz and Robin Londsdale win second place in the Owner Residential Category.
