Waterwise Garden Competition 2009The 2009 Kalgoorlie-Boulder annual Waterwise Garden Competition was another great success with the standard of nominations extraordinarily high and over 30 nominations received. The judges found it extremely difficult to judge especially across the residential owner maintained garden. The 2009 competition particularly focussed on all aspects of creating and maintaining a Waterwise garden, the overall appearance, colour and tidiness of gardens and verges. The Judges this year were particularly looking at the effort and love gardeners placed into the gardens. The competition showed that people are recognising the importance of conserving water and was demonstrated in many gardens. The judges were extremely impressed at the entrant’s ability to identify low water use plants and there was an increased use of mulch, stones and paving in the gardens, with several gardens clearly demonstrating that alternative ground covers mixed in with waterwise plantings can make very unique and attractive garden. It was great to see that a number of residents are also maintaining their verges and reducing or removing altogether, high water use lawns and gardens. Garden styles varied greatly, native, cottage, cactus/succulent, formal and informal gardens where presented for judging. $1200 worth of Bergie’s vouchers and 6 trailer loads of mulch donated by Bergies soils were won.
KBULG wishes to thank all the entrants for participating in the Waterwise Garden Competition and all the sponsors for making the competition possible.
