ABOUT US - INTRODUCTION AND HISTORY

The Kalgoorlie-Boulder Urban Landcare Group (KBULG) was formed in May 1994 as a community landcare group. KBULG replaced the Goldfields Dust Abatement Committee (GDAC), which operated for over 20 years. The GDAC formed in 1973 in response to severe dust storms that affected the entire Kalgoorlie-Boulder community.

Over time the GDAC changed its focus from a professional body to a community group. Thus KBULG has a broader scope with greater emphasis on community involvement in developing education programs and activities and in promoting community awareness of landcare.

KBULG is one of the first urban landcare groups in an arid area. The group was incorporated in 1996.

Highlights for 2005/06 were:

• Annual Community Tree Planting Day 2005 Over 4000 trees were
planted opposite the Oasis on Johnston Street by more than 200 people.

• Goldfields Waterwise Garden Competition It was a very successful
year for the 2005 Waterwise Garden Competition with some amazing
entries.

• Bushwalks & Nightstalks Lots of students from Kalgoorlie-Boulder
and from elsewhere in WA have participated in bushwalks and nightstalks
around Karlkurla Park. KBULG also held an annual Nightstalk for
Kalgoorlie-Boulder residents.

• Junior Landcare – Schools Tidy Day and Tree Planting Days. During Schools
Tidy Day children collected rubbish from around their playgrounds and schools.
Kalgoorlie Primary School Kindy and Pre-Primary Classes put the rubbish to bed in
their pyjamas! Approximately 500 children participated in this years Junior Landcare
Treeplanting, planting over 500 trees.

• Native Plant Group grew around four thousand plants and trees. These
supplemented numbers at our Treeplanting Days and many were donated to Schools
and Community Groups. We held our first Shadehouse clearout Native Plant Sale in
August 2005, raising $700 for the Native Plant Group.

• Hopkins Park Native Plant Garden The Green Corps started work to revamp
the Native Plant Garden at Hopkins Park. This work was continued by a group of
KBULG volunteers who did more planting in May 2006.

• Weed Competition 2006 1311kgs of caltrops were presented at
the Weigh-in. We had to go and find bigger scales!

• Peace Park Interpretive Garden Planting was planted out in late
2005, and is in the process of having signage and seating installed. It
will provide another exciting recreational resource for Kalgoorlie-
Boulder residents.
