Working for the Dole at Karlkurla

Hexagonal Lookout In order to achieve the goals, KBULG developed the 1st Work for the Dole Project in the Goldfields which commenced in March 1999. With funding from the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder and the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations, in the 3 years the Work for Dole participants have been involved in:

  • building an octagonal lookout on the main hill with 360 degree views of the surrounding bushland and features
  • building a boardwalk across a season creekline where the Karlkurla's grow
  • building a shed, shelter and work area
  • building a long drop toilet
  • constructing 20 jarrah picnic tables
  • building a nursery to propagate local native plants with seed collected from in the park
  • cultivating a vegetable garden
  • erecting plant identification labels with the plants scientific, common and aboriginal names in front of about 50 different plants
  • installing interpretive signage as part of KBULG's Centenary of Federation project
  • laying the reticulation for an Olympic Landcare Project where 2000 trees and shrubs were planted in the park by 400 community members.
